There are several area in Yogyakarta that become the favourite of non-Indonesian students to live while they study in Yogya. Those are;

Pogung Baru (insert google map)

The Pogung Baru area is one of the most popular areas for non-Indonesian students. There are various kos (boarding house) or homestay. It is a high quality area with easy access to food and accommodation. The bad side of this area is that there are too many non-Indonesians students live here so that you may not experience the real Jogjakarta experience as it is too isolated.

Pogung Baru is just off Jl Kaliurang, behind the Bank Bukopin & Vidi I Hotel. It has long been a favourite with western students, with its nice houses and rooms, easy street lay-out with map, proximity to Jl Kaliurang, good warung & supermarket, and it’s close to some universities. If you feel uncomfortable there and want to find more ‘javanese’ atmosphere, you can try to go to the area next to Pogung Baru, that are Pogung Lor (North Pogung) and Pogung Kidul (South Pogung). If you go further you will reach Pogung Rejo which gives ricefield as your window scenery.

Karang

The Karang area is located between Jalan Gejayan, Ring Road Utara, Jalan Kaliurang and the Selokan Mataram (Mataram Drain/Canal), not far from UGM.

Nearest Jl Kaliurang and the Hotel Vidi III is Karangwuni. This area is rich in kos, of a highly ‘authentic’, Indonesian-student style. It is very handy for evening meals and accessing public transport, which can be harder to find on the south side without walking to the Fakultas Kedokteran Hewan UGM intersection. Walk round and along the maze of streets and gang, or stroll the length of the Selokan several times, taking different routes to get to know the area.  As you go further in or further east, you come to Karanggayam. Further along still is Karangasem, highly recommended by students (enter from Karanggayam, or the Selokan or Jl Gejayan). At the end of the rectangle, near Jl Gejayan, is the area called Gejayan. Go north up Jl Gejayan towards the Ring Road for the Condongcatur area.

Klebengan and Deresan Area

The area is behind the Faculty of Engineering YSU. It stretched along Selokan Mataram (Mataram Canal). Klebengan is a rather urban area where the population is pretty crowded, but the price of the house is quite cheap and the neighborhood is quite loose in rules. Some non-Indonesian students choose to live here as they want to experience the real urban life in Yogyakarta. If you go north from Klebengan, you will find Deresan area. It is a quiet area with a peaceful atnmosphere. Some of the houses are still on the colonial-architecture style. It is a nice place to live for the one who enjoy solitude in the evening.
